pink and blue

Last night while at the Royals game (the boys in blue beat Cleveland 11 to 7), Heidi got the call we've been expecting for days...Madeline Grace Lingenfelser entered the world by C-section last night at 6:07pm -- 7 lbs 9 oz, 21.5 in long and beautiful like her mom!

Mom and baby are doing well! Welcome to the world, Madeline! We can't wait to meet you!

school house rock

Today we attended the open house for a residence built by Studio 804, a design/build program (typically for 3rd year graduate students) at the University of Kansas School of Architecture and Urban Design coordinated by Professor Dan Rockhill. This 501(c)3, not-for-profit program focuses on the creation of community based architecture.
It was a great space (one we'd love to live in!) and was designed to be very energy efficient and utilized many "green" building products!

dining al fresco

Last night while walking Vokey and enjoying a beautiful spring evening, we decided to enjoy dinner on the patio of a French restaurant in our neighborhood. After watching the season finale of our favorite show, The Office, we walked down the Trolley Track Trail to Aixois. We dined on Salade Lyonnaise (frisee salad with bacon, walnuts, raspberries and a poached egg on top), Moules au Roquefort (mussels cooked with Roquefort cream), a double cut berkshire port chop with a shitake mushroom sauce and the chocolate espresso tart.

Bike to Work Week

It's Bike to Work week here in Kansas City. Because the emphasis is on carbon emissions reduction, people can participate whether they bike, walk, bus or carpool. While we typically ride the bus to work, and reduce our car trips as much as possible, it's fun to log these miles and see the difference we can make. Click here to see what we're up to!

where's warren?

As soon as we heard that there were wildfires in LA, Georgia, and Florida we knew it wouldn't be long before we heard from our helpful fire information officer, Warren Bielenberg. Sure enough, he showed up in today's Christian Science Monitor. He's working at the Okefenokee fire in Georgia.

In other news, Coe won two games today and will play Illinois Wesleyan Saturday at 1 pm! Go Kohawks!

Go Kohawks!

Some of you may know that our niece, Mackenzie just finished her freshman year at Coe College. She plays softball for Coe (3rd base) and is currently playing in the NCAA Women's Softball Regional in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Her picture (above) was recently featured on the Coe College Athletics homepage! The girls play again Friday afternoon. Good Luck, Mackenzie! Go Kohawks!!

crocus sativus

I decided not to sign up for the intermediate cake class this session which leaves my Tuesday nights free for the gym and cooking at home! This week we tried another Giada recipe, Saffron Orzo with Shrimp from page 127 of 'Everyday Pasta'. Josh and Amy brought us Spanish saffron from their trip to Pamplona last summer. It was wonderful and tasted even better sitting out on the porch on a warm (and rain free!) spring evening!

ART you glad it's the weekend?

Art seemed to a the theme of this weekend as we enjoyed the First Friday gallery walk and the Brookside Art Fair. The weather was beautiful for both but it's been raining all day today. We couldn't play golf as planned, but did get some things done around the house.

morning buzz

On my way to a morning meeting I stopped at the new Magazines and Coffee (MAC) located in the new TWA/Crossroads Garage at 1722 Main Street, next door to Souperman. I ordered their signature drink, the Howard Hughes ("hazelnut and chocolate syrup with gold flecks served with a moist towelette for the compulsive handwasher") and browsed the magazines. The drink was a little too sweet, I didn't really get a moist towelette, and was disappointed to see that the "gold flecks" were really just yellow sugar, but the extensive selection of magazines all but made up for it! I'll definitely make a return trip the next time I have a layover in the crossroads district!

roses are red

well, mine were pink...but, tonight was the night--i learned how to make roses from icing!

i was pleasantly surprised at how they turned out! it's much easier than it looks-and i'm sure they look better than they taste (the icing is just crisco and powdered sugar!)

this week's cake is lemon with raspberry filling. and, of course, lots of icing roses!
