growing old(er) in style

My week of travel, and evening social/work engagements culminated with the celebration of my friend Kamille's birthday. Kamille hired a limo for the evening and we were each picked up in style. After drinks on her friend Marti's beautiful front porch, we headed down to the Power and Light District for dinner followed by drinks in the Crossroads.

Wicked Fun

A lighting rep invited me to a night of Wicked Fun...dinner at Jack Stack followed by a performance of the Broadway musical, Wicked. Mike wasn't able to attend so my friend Angela filled in as my date. We had great seats in the 6th row and the performance was incredible! The scenery, costumes and lighting were amazing! Based on the book by Winnie Holzman, Wicked is a sort of prequel to the Wizard of Oz and focuses on the lives of Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West and her relationship with Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. I highly recommend seeing this show!

test, test

Since joining BCA last July, I have been working on renovations to the north end of the Bloch Cancer Survivor's Park on the Country Club Plaza. Last week, the new sculpture, 'Transformed Flower' by artist Phillip Smith arrived and the park is almost complete. In preparation for the Cancer Rally and ribbon cutting ceremony on June 1, the design team met for dinner and a lighting review on Wednesday night. It was the first time we had seen the lights on in the new park and it was exciting!

let's go fly a kite

For the past two years, I have been president of the Greater Kansas City Alumnae Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta. The group exists to serve the local college chapters of Kappa Alpha Theta, raise funds of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and provide social and networking opportunities to the 1,800+ Thetas living in the greater Kansas City area.

While it has been very rewarding to serve in this capacity, it can be a very demanding and time consuming job. This week, I passed the gavel to our next President and celebrated my retirement with Theta friends by flying kites (one of our sorority symbols) on the lawn of the Nelson Atkins Art Muesum.

L+O

Mark and Shannon were invited to a wedding in Kansas City so they, along with Lukas and Olivia, spent the weekend with us. This was the first time that we got to spend one on one time with Lukas and Olivia and we had a great time! After dinner (Lukas liked helping Mike make pizza), we went on a walk and found our neighbor, Isabell, and her parents playing at the park. The kids had fun and even held hands walking home!

the main event

Yesterday we participated in the inagural Ma1n Street M1le, a one mile run on Main Street in mid-town Kansas City. Recently, Brian Clark and Associates completed a master plan for improvements along the Main Street corridor and the race was a way to raise awareness and change perceptions of the corridor. This was our first time participating in a one mile race and it's quite a bit different from the distance events we're used to! It was a small event (200+ participants) so we started in the front of the pack (in the non competitive heat) and, a few minutes later, we were done! We both crosssed the finish line in less than 8 minutes! Heidi finished 2nd in her age group (the first time she has ever placed!) and several of our friends were "winners" too!

m i a

It's been awhile since we've posted to the blog...Mike is in the process of studying for his licensing exams, training for a triathlon and is currently overseeing the construction of a parking garage in Columbia, Missouri. Since February I've been commuting to Des Moines on Mondays and Tuesdays to fill in for a project manager who is on maternity leave. We'll be back to blogging soon!
